About Casa Fortuna

Casa Fortuna is a minimalist-modern, oceanfront retreat on the beautiful white sand beach of the East Cape. Perched on the apex of the first arroyo off of the highway, the residence boasts staggering ocean views and a private top-of-the-world feel.  Secluded off-grid living, but just 20 minutes back into town where world class art, shopping & dining await. Casa Fortuna is an irreplaceable surf-centric local, just, 0.5 miles to the first point of Shipwreck, 2.75 miles to La Fortuna and 5.5 miles to Nine Palms. Whale watch by day from the back pool deck and enjoy stunning sunsets from the front above the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range.

This property is for guests who value the breathtaking beauty of this unique oceanfront retreat over the modern conveniences of a 5 star resort.  In the spirit of sustainability and limitations of being off grid, we ask our guests to be good stewards of our limited electricity, water, and propane.

This home is 100% off the grid and is powered by solar with a backup generator.  Water and propane are trucked to the property, stored in tanks, and replenished as needed. As long as guests limit spa usage to 3 hours per day, there should be ample power with out the generator kicking on for the duration of your stay. However, during periods of overcast skies, the generator may kick on for a few hours to charge the batteries. We have stayed for many weeks throughout all seasons including cloudy days, without using the generator and with zero problems.

We offer a heated spa which is included in your rent, however, we do not offer a heated pool since the amount of energy used to heat a pool at this off-grid property is prohibitive. The pool and hot tub are cleaned and serviced weekly.

Casa Fortuna has AC units in 2 of the 3 bedrooms.  The AC is only operational between June 1 and October 31 and not operational for the remainder of the year.  The AC units require the operation of the generator and will not run on the solar system for more than a few hours.  Due to the off-grid limitations of the property the AC should only be operated while sleeping.  Please check the average temperatures for the time of year you would like to visit and if you feel that you need 24/7 AC, this is not the home for you.  Generally it is likely to be hot and uncomfortable June through the end of October.

Kids are welcome, however, due to the home's unique positioning on the sand dune, we have several significant 'drop offs' that do not have fences, railings or gates.   In addition, our pool is not fenced and does not have safety features.  We do not feel that this property would be safe or appropriate for children less than 3, irresponsible children, heavily intoxicated adults or inattentive parents.

We have 3 security cameras: 1 overlooking the front door, 1 overlooking the garage, 1 overlooking the back beach.
